East Bay Comes Up Short in Defeat to Humboldt State, 86-78

ARCATA, Calif. –
The Pioneer men's basketball team came up short in an 86-78 CCAA defeat to Humboldt State on February 2.

The defeat drops the Pioneers to 5-9 in the CCAA and 7-11 overall.

Cal State East Bay made 29 baskets and added five 3-pointers compared to 28 and three 3-pointers for Humboldt State.

The Lumberjacks won the game from the free throw line converting 27 of 40 attempts while the Pioneers were 15 of 21.

Mark Samuels led the Pioneers in scoring with 23 points. After being held scoreless against Cal State Dominguez Hills on January 28, Roshun Wynne had a solid game with 18 points and eight rebounds. Vincent Capellino came off the bench to score 13 points and seven rebounds.

Humboldt State, which avenged an earlier defeat to Cal State East Bay, improves to 10-5 in CCAA play and 14-5 for the season. Brandon Sperling had a game-high 24 points while Randy Hunter added 22 in a winning effort.

The Lumberjacks led by as many as 15 points midway in the second half.

A three-pointer by Jacari Whitfield with 6:01 left narrowed the Lumberjacks' margin to 68-61.

The Pioneers chipped away at the lead and only trailed 80-76 with 53 seconds left.

Humboldt State outscored Cal State East Bay 6-2 in the remaining 53 seconds to earn the victory.
  
The Lumberjacks held an early 12-9 lead and went on an 11-2 run to extend their advantage to 11 points with 11:52 left.

A layup by Scott Clark with 5:27 left gave the Lumberjacks a 31-15 lead.

The Pioneers cut the deficit to 10 points three minutes later as Wynne hit a three-pointer.

Samuels converted two free throws as the Pioneers pulled within eight points at 36-28 with 2:16 left.

The Lumberjacks scored seven unanswered points to take a 43-28 halftime lead.

Cal State East Bay will play at Sonoma State on February 4.
