BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Cal State East Bay water polo team kicked off the Roadrunner Invitational with an 11-10 win over CSU Bakersfield before dropping a 14-12 decision to No. 16 Hartwick on the opening day of the tournament at Hillman Aquatic Center in Bakersfield. The Pioneers (10-8) extended their win streak to four games after holding onto an early lead against the Roadrunners before giving up 11 second-half goals in the setback to the Hawks.
East Bay got off to a quick start in game one, out-scoring the Roadrunners, 5-2 in the first quarter. The Pioneers continued to dominate in the second frame to take a 7-3 lead into the half.
CSU Bakersfield stormed back in the second half, starting off with four goals in the third quarter to outdo the Pioneers by one and cut the lead to just three, 10-7, going into the last period. Though the Roadrunners outscored East Bay 3-1 in the final eight minutes, the Pioneers got that crucial goal to pick up the 11-10 victory.
Sophie Armstrong and
Claire Pierce led the Pioneers with three goals apiece, while
Sara Hudyn added a pair.
Carly Clark,
Kate McAfee and
Erica Crain also got onto the scoresheet with one goal each to give East Bay six scorers.
Jayme Pekarske posted 14 saves to give the Pioneers their second win over the Roadrunners this season.
In the second game of the day, the Pioneers again jumped out to an early lead. East Bay opened the game with five goals in the first quarter while holding Hartwick scoreless for the opening eight minutes. Leading 5-0, East Bay added another two goals in the second quarter while the Hawks got on the board with three goals to send the game into the half with the Pioneers up 7-3.
Hartwick stormed back after the break, outscoring the Pioneers 6-4 in the third quarter to pull within two goals. The Hawks continued their comeback in the final period, scoring five goals while holding East Bay to just one goal over the final eight minutes to take the lead and pick up the come-from-behind victory.
Clark paced the Pioneers in game two, scoring four goals, while Pierce had her second hat trick to finish the day with a team-leading six goals. Crain also added three goals and Hudyn rounded out the scoring with a pair. Pekarske posted eight saves in the loss.
Cal State East Bay returns to action for the final day of the Roadrunner Invitational tomorrow, taking on La Verne and Brown to finish out the tournament. The Pioneers and Leopards are set to open the day at 8 a.m. tomorrow.
