HAYWARD, Calif. — Pioneer head men's basketball coach Gus Argenal has announced that Aptos, Calif. native Nick Grieves has committed to Cal State East Bay for the 2013-14 season. Grieves, a 6'3" guard, highlights Argenal's first recruiting class at East Bay.

"Nick is an exceptional shooter, but he also has the ability to score in a variety of ways," said Argenal. "He can attack off the dribble, spread the floor with his range, and with his length, he can have a huge impact on defense.  We are extremely excited to have him join our program and the Cal State East Bay community."

An academic junior, Grieves spent the last two seasons competing for San Jose State at the Division I level. He played in 13 games during the 2012-13 season, averaging 2.8 points per game. He scored a career-high 18 points in a game against UC Santa Cruz last November, knocking down 6-of-8 from three-point range.

Prior to his stint at San Jose State, Grieves was a standout prep player at Aptos High School, twice earning first-team All-Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League honors. As a senior, he averaged over 20 points per game, including a 44-point effort against North Salinas High School in December of 2010. That year, Grieves led Aptos to a 22-6 record and a trip to the semifinals of the Central Coast Section tournament.

"Nick's the best shooter I have ever coached," said Joe Smith, head coach at Aptos High School. "He has NBA three-point range, a quick release, and just a knack for scoring. He's a really good kid, someone who wants to be coached."

Grieves adds to a talented Pioneer backcourt that already features guards Mark Samuels, Gabe Kindred, and Jacari Whitfield. CSUEB will kick off the 2013-14 regular season on the road against Academy of Art on Nov. 8.
