HAYWARD, Calif. -- Cal State East Bay head men's basketball coach
Gus Argenal has announced that former Santa Clara University center Robert Garrett has committed to transfer to CSUEB for the 2015-16 season. Standing at seven feet tall, Garrett will be eligible as a senior after playing the past three seasons at SCU.
"I am thrilled to have Robert joining our basketball family," said Argenal. "I have watched him compete since his high school days in Sacramento, and I have always admired the intensity and passion he plays with. He will bring not only a defensive presence in the paint, but the skills to score in different ways."
A native of Vallejo, Calif., Garrett has played in 89 games and made 22 starts in three years for Santa Clara at the Division I level. He ranks seventh on the Broncos' all-time career list with 81 career blocks. Garrett has also scored 145 points and grabbed 167 rebounds as a collegiate center, while shooting 51.8 percent from the field for his career.
Prior to attending SCU, Garrett was a standout prep player at Sacramento High School. He averaged 13 points, eight rebounds, and four blocks per game as a senior, and the Long Beack Press-Telegram named him to its "Best in the West" basketball third team.
"Robert is a quality student, great teammate, and the type of winner that will help lead us to where we want to go," Argenal added. "Pioneer fans are going to love supporting this young man and what he brings to our program!"
The 2014-15 Pioneers continue their non-conference schedule this weekend with their home opener, a 7 p.m. game against Bristol University on Saturday, Nov. 29 in Pioneer Gymnasium.
