HAYWARD, Calif. -- Cal State East Bay head men's baskeball coach
Gus Argenal has announced the addition of
Daniel Eberhardt to the Pioneer coaching staff for the 2014-15 season. Eberhardt spent the previous two seasons as an assistant coach for California Maritime Academy and was responsible for recruiting, opponent scouting, player development, film exchange, academic advisory, and community service for the Keelhaulers.
"When I met Dan, I was immediately impressed with his passion for coaching and his leadership abilities," said Argenal. "He has learned from a highly-respected coach in Bryan Rooney and has experienced league championships and postseason play both as a coach and student-athlete. He is a perfect fit for our staff, and I can't wait for him to start working with our team in the fall."
In 2013-14, Eberhardt helped Cal Maritime capture both the regular season and tournament championships for the Cal Pac Conference and advance to the NAIA National Tournament for the third consecutive year. The team was ranked in every national top-25 poll, climbing as high as No. 14. In 2012-13, Eberhardt's first season on the coaching staff, the Keelhaulers advanced all the way to the NAIA Sweet 16, and the squad was awarded the prestigious Dr. James Naismith Sportsmanship Award.
Eberhardt was a student-athlete at Cal Maritime prior to beginning his coaching career. He competed on the basketball team for two seasons and played in 58 games. As a senior, Eberhardt appeared in every game and captained a Keelhaulers team that won the school's first Cal Pac championship and set a program mark with 21 victories. That historic squad also earned the program's first top-25 ranking, its first undefeated season in conference play, and its first bid to the NAIA tournament.
A native of Sacramento, Eberhardt earned his B.S. in International Business and Logistics from Cal Maritime in 2012. Prior to that, he played for two seasons at Grossmont College in El Cajon, Calif. As a sophomore in 2009-10, he led the team in points, assists, and steals and earned honorable mention All-League honors. Eberhardt was also an All-League prep player at Woodcreek High School in Roseville, Calif.
During his playing and coaching career, he has worked numerous summer camps, including UCLA, Stanford Hi Potential, Hoop Mountain, and Sly Park. He has also run Holy Hoops Basketball Camp in Sacramento for the past seven years.
Joining Argenal and fellow assistant coach
Jay Flores, Eberhardt makes it three former guards at the helm of the 2014-15 Pioneers.
